The Typhoon

MASSIVE -and carrying 20 long range ballistic nuclear missiles - the Typhoon was the largest submarine in the world and greatly feared by NATO. A humongous 177 metres long, its missiles can strike their targets without it ever leaving port in Russia. Are they still roaming the sea...? In any case, its another Russian beauty, although a terrible one!

Hi Mike!!

Thanks very much!! Looking forward to hearing your comments. What do you think of this fearsome beast of a sub?

Ger,

the (Soviet project number) 941 "Akula" is indeed an impressing piece of technology.

I will also visit your blog every now and then. Good luck to you !

Thanks Heribert for the information and the encouragement! But can you tell us, are any of these in service still?

I have no idea whether these boats are still in use but, as an educated guess, I'd say they aren't. Russia's military doctrine has changed and there are smaller, better and cheaper to operate boats available already.

E.g. the project number 971 "Bars Class" -Nato codename "Akula" - which is in terms of capability and "battle worthiness" superior to the US "Los Angeles Class" or "Improved LA-Class" subs.

I hope this helps

No, but one of them is now serving as a test platform for the infamous Bulava missile.
