Park Pobedy Metro Station

As sure as Mayakovskaya is one of the oldest metro stations, Park Pobedy is one of the newest. At 90 metres down, its said to be the deepest tube station in the world - it takes a full 10 minutes to ride the escalator up or down! I've done it! The station itself is unique in that it marked a conscious effort by metro designers to build something beautiful again after years of cheap, unattractive new stations and a new found confidence in the future. Park Pobedy means 'Victory Park' in english, owing to the enormous park-monument nearby and the Museum of the Great Patriotic War.

Enormous, loud, gas guzzling and with a near-perfect safety record, the Ilyushin 86 was the Soviet Union's first wide-bodied airliner. Ever been on one? I have! This huge aircraft is still used all over the CIS and within Russia, although Aeroflot are phasing it out this year. Its update, the Ilyushin 96, is far more economical to run and is one of President Putin's planes.

The Typhoon

MASSIVE -and carrying 20 long range ballistic nuclear missiles - the Typhoon was the largest submarine in the world and greatly feared by NATO. A humongous 177 metres long, its missiles can strike their targets without it ever leaving port in Russia. Are they still roaming the sea...? In any case, its another Russian beauty, although a terrible one!

Mayakovskaya metro station

Grand Prix winner at Paris, Mayakovskaya is surely one the most beautiful metro stations in Moscow's entire enormous system, if not the world. Its main entrance opens onto Bolshaya Sadovaya, the street made famous in Bulgakov's 'Master and Margarita' (Patriarch's Ponds are just a short walk away) and is a well known meeting place for Muscovites. Named after tragic Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovskii, it is a testament to what Russians can do when they get their act togther.

Like it? Love it? Hate it? Post a comment! Suggestions for other metro stations welcome!
