As sure as Mayakovskaya is one of the oldest metro stations, Park Pobedy is one of the newest. At 90 metres down, its said to be the deepest tube station in the world - it takes a full 10 minutes to ride the escalator up or down! I've done it! The station itself is unique in that it marked a conscious effort by metro designers to build something beautiful again after years of cheap, unattractive new stations and a new found confidence in the future. Park Pobedy means 'Victory Park' in english, owing to the enormous park-monument nearby and the Museum of the Great Patriotic War.

As for Park Pobedy, I tend to have overall positive feelings toward the new station. It used to be that if you wanted to go to Victory Park you had to take the light blue line to Kutuzovskaya, which was a VERY long walk to the park & museum. It's nice to have something more convenient.
As for aesthetics, I agree that it's nice that they're finally trying to build beautiful stations again, and I think they've more or less succeeded with Park Pobedy. Still, it feels too new and shiny. I'd give it 20-30 years to get "broken in," at which point it will have aged into an elegant place. Part of the beauty of the old stations, I think, is that they're a bit worn. They've seen decades of Muscovites go about their business during the good years and the bad years, and that only adds to their beauty.
As for the escalator ride, it really is something!
Nonetheless, it seems that at some point we need to have a discussion about the new Metro trains they're introducing. I don't care for them myself, as I prefer the character of the well-worn old-style wagons.
I don't know if you guys know the reason why Park Pobedy station is so deep. But I will tell you anyway. The part of track that it is on was part of Metro 2, which was Stalin's direct line to his bunker outside the city. Metro 2 run to the Kremlin, to the old Ministry of Foreign Affairs building across from Lubyanka then north under Miasnitskaya. You can read more about it here
Rubashov - certainly it has a very new feel to it and its very shiny all round! What is amazing is that time generally improves a lot of metro stations. Kievskaya seems to get better every day! The walk from Kutuzovskaya would be very long - unless I'm mistaken, all along Kutuzovskii Prospect? Thats a fair walk, though I like this part of Moscow a lot myself.
The new carriages I am not impressed with. They're sort of space age and look out of place in the older stations. Still, I imagine they're being replaced with safety in mind. But they arent pretty thats for sure.

I'd heard he had a secret line alright but took no notice of the story, in much the same way as I did the story about and underground line from Moscow to St Petes! )))There's no ''Babushka stations'' only at the top and bottom -I think! But I'll tell you a scary metro story. A few years ago -in april, at the weekend of Hitlers birthday - off I went from Prospekt Verndaskogo, where I lived,to see Spartak play CSKA at Luzhniki. Its only three or four stops to Sportivnaya from there and when I got on the train there were plenty of Spartak fans also making their merry way.
As you may well know, Hitlers birthday has resonance for scumbags everywhere and its a bad idea for dark skinned foreigners to go anywhere in Moscow during this time. Anyway I'm a pasty white skinned Paddy who looks Russian so I took no notice, but sadly had to leave a Canadian I was living with at home. He was born of Sudanese parents, so bringing him would have been a bad idea. Anyway I arrived at Sportivnaya, red Spartak shirt on, ready for football. What I saw shocked me. The platform was full - and I mean full -of skinheads. They were chanting and shoutng something aggressively. When I saw this I remembered Russian warnings about not going out in football jerseys -it can get you a hiding-and I was terrified there might be CSKA fans there, some of whom are well able for a scrap. I walked through this horrendous scene to the escalator and quietly got on. I was literally surrounded by skinheads, who thanksfully took no notice of me, shouting and screaming. I was terrified and thought if I was to open my mouth they'd know I was foreign and I would be beaten to death there and then. I was ready to wee my pants.
Eventually we reached the top. Never in my life was I happier to see men with Kalashnikovs - the whole area and route to the stadium was surrounded by cops and OMON, heavily armed and trigger itchy. Thank God!
Anyway I got there in one piece and splashed out 700 roubles on a good seat. Spartak lost 3-0 and so began the end of their reign as Russia's top club. I'll never forget that day though.
Ger, that is a hell of a story. Interesting that there are no babushka booths though at the PP station. The new Mayakovskaya one has them, as I recall, and they are all fancy-looking. I'm not sure of the proper design term, but they employ a lot of glass and brushed steel. Very contemporary, anyway, meaning that the decidedly non-contemporary ladies who often occupy them look quite out of place!
The first time rode that escalator I could only think about what if they all quit working. That is a long walk up.

I dont know if it was part of the Stalin line (I assume you're speaking about Sportivnaya), but it is on the red line, the oldest line, which opened in 1934. Now I'm not sure if it was part of that original red-line which opened or was a later extension. But it sure has a deep escalator, and I'm failry sure that it was built with bomb-shelter in mind.
